Managing a Creative Environment

Here is an example of an illustrators work space containing a large collection of photos mainly consisting of different types of typography as well as a wide range of colour paints. I think this is a good example of a creative workspace to help generate the flow of ideas, where as you are surrounded with material that could lead to many types of outcome, weather it being combination between two images as well as the use of backgrounds behind text.  The use of media is spread out well and easily accessible, so if an idea does come to mind you can act on it quickly rather than worrying about finding the tool best appropriate for your idea.

Here is an example of a Disney Pixar studio, which clearly radiates a sense of passion.  I believe that the greater the collection of resources will have a greater influence on future work to come. It seems to be a lot more productive, creative and happy work space containing a playful environment rather than in a grey boring one. The physical workspace is one of the most ignored, yet most important factors in creating good workplaces. Constant change within the office would only contribute by producing fresh newer ideas which may relate better to the forever changing world we live in.

Restating problems

I think a good example of restating a problem through the use of media would be the war in Iraq. Where as we see various images of destruction and chaos, were not looking at the other side of the picture such as freedom amongst the people.

‘Opium fields spread across Iraq as farmers try to make ends meet’’

A series of words can often trigger off an automatic reaction without looking into the situation from another angle, such as the war on drugs in Iraq. Whereas the drug trade is supporting the Taliban and making them stronger, you may not think how this has come to be with the farmers having no free will. Straight away you may see the farmers looking into their own financial benefit but after looking deeper the farmers are often forced into doing this with the threat of losing their family to slavery as well as debts in which they are in simply from trying to survive.

‘Iraq war coming to an end’’

Here we have another trigger, leading to think differently without facts being made available. If the war in Iraq was coming to an end, then why do the governments want to send 50,000 more troops into the war? This trigger seems to suggest the opposite of the true facts, meaning the war in Iraq is still far from over and that we are just contributing to the loss of life of soldiers.

Design process from brief to conclusion

Here I will start my own design process for a made up brief on creating a children’s book. To help generate ideas I will be using just 3 words to start my design process.

I have chosen to use the words fox, microwave and television

Now for each of these three words I will sketch things associated with them in order to help generate ideas that can be rearranged to help come up with a story.

Fox - fox’s are known to be scavengers as well as being sneaky, so I may draw things related to a fox such as, chickens, bins, smells, noises, environment.

Microwave - for this word I would sketch various foods, placement, people, electric

Television - adverts, news, food,

Once I have created sketches for each word I can then think about rearranging them to create a meaning/story.

Using the three words and ideas relating to them I have come up with a story, where the fox can smell a chicken cooking in a microwave, he then cleverly sneaks into the house undetected looking for the chicken he smelt. Then hes sees a television with an advert of gravy and sees a chicken. the fox becomes over powerd with excitement and steals the television thinking it contains a chicken. Only when he returns to the woods does he discover there is no chicken inside the box creating the final conclusion for my idea.
